Tidal partners with Telecoms company MTN
Tidal brings the streaming service into Africa in partnership with MTN, a telecoms company. As announced, the service will be launched in Uganda today. Following the mobile plans of MTN, Tidal is available to the 10.5 million Ugandan MTN subscribers, with streaming data included in the deal.
The collaboration will permit MTN customers to enjoy access to Tidal 30 days free – including sign up for one, three, seven and 30 day subscriptions options. This new deal will mark Tidal’s availability in a second African country (Rwanda), as the service is also available in South Africa. Nevertheless, the collaboration between the streaming and telecoms company is the first carrier partnership in the continent. The deal is just the beginning of the partnership since there will be even more expansion in others African countries served by MTN.
Tidal Chief Operating Officer Lior Tibon said: “Africa has longed be an inspiration for music heard all over the world, as such it is a delight for Tidal to showcase the vibrant musicians on its platform. We are also overjoyed to introduce a new wave of digital music to Uganda via this partnership with MTN.”
Recently, Africa has become a growing business hub for the music industry. Major labels have enhanced their efforts and visibility in the continent. Though streaming services are available in this area, it is not widely available in most of its countries. Thus a need for growth and also an opportunity to respond to the particular needs and trends of its markets. And the partnership between operators follows a series of deals between streaming services and mobile operators announced last month, including a Tidal-Sprint package.
Damian Marley a Tidal artist-owner said in a statement that “I remember hearing stories about my father ‘s records being destroyed once they got to Africa. They didn’t want the people to hear the message in the music. What a beautiful day it is now when Africa will not only have access to my family’s music but to all music that exists.”
In order to educate local artists about the streaming service and to work together for future projects, Tidal is organising a collaboration Conference on Sept.27. Following the conference, a concert featuring Kranium, Dj Spinall, Beenie Gunter and local DJ’s in Kampala will be host by Tidal ad MTN.
